Lecture about Dag Hammarskjöld

“This man has kept the peace of the world almost single-handedly.”

These are the words of John Steinbeck in a letter to the painter Bo Beskow, referring to their mutual friend and then-UN Secretary-General. Who was Dag Hammarskjöld, and what was his mission? In this lecture, Olaf Eggestad offers a fresh perspective on Hammarskjöld’s personality and expertise, as well as his reflections recorded in Vägmärken. Dag Hammarskjöld served as Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953, until his sudden death in a plane crash in 1961.

Olaf Eggestad is a pianist and musicologist who has engaged with Hammarskjöld’s life and thought for several decades.

The event is a collaboration between Glød Light Festival and the Cathedral and St. Petri Parish.
